BATON ROUGE — There’s little doubt about who LSU’s most versatile player has been during preseason practice—sophomore Ju’Juan Johnson.

The former Lafayette Christian Academy star quarterback has taken snaps at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver, making a strong case as the Tigers’ ultimate utility man. LSU has installed special red zone and goal-line packages designed specifically for Johnson, highlighting his dynamic skill set and ability to contribute in multiple roles.

During LSU’s 14th preseason practice on Friday, Johnson was primarily seen working at running back, taking reps behind sophomore starter Caden Durham and ahead of Kaleb Jackson. Freshman standout Harlem Berry appeared to be limited, which may have opened up more opportunities for Johnson in the backfield.

“He is focusing his time at running back at this point,” head coach Brian Kelly told reporters after Friday’s practice.

Running back depth has become a growing concern for LSU. In addition to Berry’s limited availability, freshman J.T. Lindsey is dealing with legal issues after turning himself in last week on accessory after the fact charges, further thinning the position group.

Earlier this preseason, Kelly acknowledged the coaching staff faces a tough decision regarding Johnson’s status—whether to redshirt him or maximize his usage this season. Given his versatility and the current roster needs, Johnson’s role could continue to expand as LSU approaches its season opener.
