BOGALUSA, Louisiana - After a 36-31 loss on Friday night, rumors started to circulate that the Franklinton Demons did not want to renew their contract to continue playing Bogalusa. We reached out to Franklinton High School for a comment, but they did not return our calls.
The Lumberjacks lead the series all time against the Demons with a 39-25-2 record.
A storied rivalry between these schools that dates back over 100 years. Bogalusa dominated the series winning 15 of 16 prior to WWII. After the war, the rivalry didn't resume until the late 70s. At the time, Bogalusa head coach, Lewis Murray, negotiated a scrimmage before eventually asking them to join the jamboree hosted by Bogalusa.
In 1977, Murray managed to get Franklinton on the schedule for the first time since 1941. Franklinton beat the Jacks in 1980 for the first time since 1926. The Jacks would lose in 1981 and 1983 but took control over the rivalry once again.
In 1999, the Demons began an 18-game winning streak defeating Bogalusa from 2001-2018. Since 2019, the Jacks are 5-0 against the Demons and this could very well be the end of it.
The Bogalusa-Franklinton rivalry is the longest consecutively played series over the past 47 years and that comes to an end after this season.
At this time we do not know why Franklinton decided not to renew the contract. We will update this article once new information is released.
It looks like for now, the Pine Burr Trophy's final resting place is 100 MJ Israel Drive, Bogalusa, Louisiana.
